PTCD -- Postal Tracking Compulsion Disorder.
The act of obsessively refreshing the tracking page when you've bought something (usually something expensive) online.
ex: "I've spent the last half hour refreshing the UPS tracking page for my wife's Christmas present. It's supposed to get here tomorrow, but I can't stop refreshing. What the hell are they waiting for in Fresno???"Labels: Christmas, holidays, Internet, obsession |

| The In Box |
There's something truly gratifying about clearing out one's email in-box. The one I have at work hasn't been emptied since I got the thing (it bottomed out, once, at 30 emails; it usually hovers around 70-80), but my own personal in-box doesn't see as much action anymore.
So I spent a few hours sorting and deleting about 1,100 emails today. Wow. Now, of course, I have a list of things to do that a bunch of those were supposed to remind me of (checking the electric bill, sending stuff to people, checking in on old friends, and so on), but at least the in-box is clear.
Well, the electronic one. My physical in-box has all sorts of things in it, but thankfully not 1,100 things in it. Tougher to ignore when it is right there on my new awesome desk.
For now.Labels: computers, Internet, obsession, organization |

| Into the Flow |
I actually made a flow chart because I couldn't mentally picture my creative work flow.
Basically, it came down to a decision of where to put what. The upshot of all of it is that...
I'm considering ditching MySpace for Facebook, mostly because of spam. I've started re-designing the blog. Obviously.
For photographs: I decided to start using Flickr as an online photo gallery, in addition to the portfolio (i.e., the very best) on my homepage. Adobe Lightroom is being used to sort, tag, and process all of my photos. MySpace/Facebook will have more photos than the gallery, but less than Flickr.
For writing: Everything gets posted onto the blog, then the best stuff gets filtered into parts of the homepage.
For music: Demos go on the blog, with a few really, really good ones making appearances on the main page.
I also decided on the home inventory program I'll be using (Home Inventory Deluxe). It has the ability to attach images to objects, which is important because I'm going to start scanning receipts and taking pictures of stuff. I want to know that if anything's ever stolen or dies with a warranty, I'm gonna get it replaced without having to screw around.
It stands next to Microsoft Money (finances), Mp3BookHelper (.mp3 file tagging), my Treo 755p and MS Outlook (to-do, calendars, phone, mp3 player) in my efforts to get and stay organized.
Theoretically, I'm going to start using CarCare, but I'm waiting until we get moved in properly (and I have all my paperwork ready to enter), and I get a massive tune-up on the Bug so that I can reset all the maintenance reminders to zero.
I am still looking for a good groceries-and-recipes program, though I'm not sure either Rachel or I are ready to start cooking, really. I also hope Winamp has a better media library next time around (and I'll be plenty upset if they don't keep my ratings).
I have so much organizing to do... stuff to write... before I have kids and so on, you know?Labels: cars, computers, kids, obsession, photography, work |

| Recent obsession |
Some of my latest obsessions.
I've begun to try to finish my U2 collection. This is a long time in the making, going back to when I bought my very first CD: U2's Rattle & Hum album. Since then I've gotten every album and a considerable amount of the singles.
The thing about the U2 catalogue is that it is almost impossibly vast. The boys in that band are never at rest, I swear. Over their 30-or-so year career, they've written about a thousand songs, and participated in innumerable others.
And I'm enough of an idiot to try to collect them all. I've actually got the majority of it, but there are certain kinds of things that stump me pretty well, such as ultra-obscure remixes of the Goldeneye Theme, (the Bond movie theme) that Edge and Bono wrote.
My want list is here.
In addition to that particular obsession, I've been designing a dream home with my wife for quite some time. Ironically, it's been the source of roughly 2/3rds of our arguments in the last year or so. I'm the dreamer and nutcase that comes up with all sorts of crazy things I'd like to see in our home. She's the one who brings me down to reality and tells me whether or not the idea is practical or just insane.
Today, I think we've managed to get the basics down except we're still not sure what to do with the washer/dryer... RecentLabels: collection, mp3, obsession, u2 |

| Random thought no. 22: I love this team |
I've been a fan of the Suns since I was a kid. I sort of dropped off midway through college, though, and have picked up in the last 3 years.
And I'm happy to say that it seems that when I'm paying attention, they do really well.
Now, I'm pretty ecstatic about their Game 7 Ass-Whoopin' of the Lakers. I admit I would probably have preferred a 4-0 sweep, boy, the Suns are sure aware that they're in Playoff ball. And what a series, too! Anyway.
I just have to keep in mind that, well, it would be pretty miraculous for the Suns to get to the Finals (much less win them). They don't really have a center. At all. They're always playing against people who are like 6" taller than them. It's amazing they've managed to keep their opponents below 200 points, if you ask me. So while my enthusiasm and hopes are not in any way diminished, I have to mentally prepare myself...
So the fever has hit me so bad that ... well ...
So Rachel asks me to make Mac and Cheese for dinner.
And I think, I ought to make some juice, too, because I'm a good little husband. And I decide on grape juice purely on the merits that I made a meal that reflects my Suns' colors.
I ... I think I've lost my mind. But it's all in good fun. Mostly.

| Others' work no. 2: Grammar |
An excerpt from Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation. It's an acerbic, very British book about people being snarky about proper punctuation... and it's about as witty and funny as a grammar book could ever be (and of course was written by a British lady). This is the passage that completely sold me on the book: Churchill said hyphens were "a blemish, to be avoided wherever possible". Yet there will always be a problem about getting rid of the hyphen: if it's not extra-marital sex (with a hyphen), it is perhaps extra marital sex, which is quite a different bunch of coconuts. ... The two hundred odd members of the Conservative Party would be lost without it. There you go. Indulging in my grammar nerdiness. I also helped proof a bunch of my colleagues' descriptions of their term projects. Just wait a few years and I'll be a mad crusader online, or running around my school after class demanding to see that my students' text messages are grammatically correct... | Exciting Event No. 4: U2 Mp3's |
So, briefly, here is my thing on Mp3's: download the music, buy the album if it's good, and definately go to the concerts. If it's a small band, donate directly and download the music. They make more money that way anyway.
That said, I've been trying to complete my U2 MP3 collection. This ... is hard. Most people don't know just how prolific that band is. I already own all the albums on CD - that's easy. Oh, no, the U2 discography is much deeper than that. There's 125 songs on their 10 albums, there's more than 200 b-sides from the singles, 100 or so from various compilations and such, and I'm not even including any live b-sides or concerts or anything like that. If you include all that, these guys' discography includes about 700 songs, all told. I'm at 470. I need another 96 to feel like I've gotten the stuff I'm really anxious for - primarily it's the studio recordings, edits and remixes.
I can hear you think: "Why would I want the five different mixes of Please?"
To me, it's really interesting to hear all these different versions of the same song. It shows, if you look carefully, how the band felt about all of the different parts of the song. In the case of Please, which is from the 1997 album POP, there were different edits for the U.S. and European markets. The album version was quite different from both, and there was another 'regular' single version as well. Also, the live version was different from the other four studio versions. I think it's well worth my time, as a musician, to study how these very successful musicians make their decisions about editing, and that's how I do it.
Unfortunately, most of the remainder is out of print and/or hard to find. Up until today, I was looking for a remix of MoFo (also from POP) called the Matthew Roberts' Explicit Mix. The LP itself sells for over $100 It was a one-sided black vinyl promo-only single pressed in very limited quantities. Hell, I was lucky to get the vinyl 12" single when it came out. And that was an easy one.
Still, I think it's worth it for the above reason. And I don't feel too guilty looking this stuff up in Mp3 simply because I can't buy it from the band (not even in the 'complete' U2 from iTunes, which has a 'mere' 398 songs). And I'm a fan. That has something to do with it, too.
