| Birthing isn't something I'm gonna do. |
I'm male. I don't get to do the more involved half of baby-making. I just watched the trailer for The Business of Being Born, which is a Ricki Lake production about how natural birthing is pretty rare nowdays and how hospitals-as-businesses have a lot to do with that. It's most likely going to present hospitals as The Evil and midwifing and water-births as The Ecstasy, but hyperbole notwithstanding, the points are sound.
This is something Rachel actually decided quite awhile ago, since her aunt (I think) is a midwife. She's also the kind of tough-minded feminist that can't believe that she (and most anyone else) can't do what women have done since there were women. I admire that, and know full well I'll need a gauntlet to keep my hand from being broken off during childbirth.
No, this is not a veiled way of saying she's pregnant, despite the fact that we've had something like half our friends and most of her co-workers tell her that they've had dreams that she is pregnant. (Grammatically, that is an awesome sentence.) But we've discussed how and why we're going to have kids, though the exact times aren't something anyone can exactingly plan (nor should it be). Honestly, the only thing that really makes me think is how she's going to get her Librarian degree amongst part-time jobs and/or pregnancy.
It's all academic now, of course. Really. Of course, it takes like a month to find out, so how would I know?Labels: feminism, kids, Rachel, women |

| Into the Flow |
I actually made a flow chart because I couldn't mentally picture my creative work flow.
Basically, it came down to a decision of where to put what. The upshot of all of it is that...
I'm considering ditching MySpace for Facebook, mostly because of spam. I've started re-designing the blog. Obviously.
For photographs: I decided to start using Flickr as an online photo gallery, in addition to the portfolio (i.e., the very best) on my homepage. Adobe Lightroom is being used to sort, tag, and process all of my photos. MySpace/Facebook will have more photos than the gallery, but less than Flickr.
For writing: Everything gets posted onto the blog, then the best stuff gets filtered into parts of the homepage.
For music: Demos go on the blog, with a few really, really good ones making appearances on the main page.
I also decided on the home inventory program I'll be using (Home Inventory Deluxe). It has the ability to attach images to objects, which is important because I'm going to start scanning receipts and taking pictures of stuff. I want to know that if anything's ever stolen or dies with a warranty, I'm gonna get it replaced without having to screw around.
It stands next to Microsoft Money (finances), Mp3BookHelper (.mp3 file tagging), my Treo 755p and MS Outlook (to-do, calendars, phone, mp3 player) in my efforts to get and stay organized.
Theoretically, I'm going to start using CarCare, but I'm waiting until we get moved in properly (and I have all my paperwork ready to enter), and I get a massive tune-up on the Bug so that I can reset all the maintenance reminders to zero.
I am still looking for a good groceries-and-recipes program, though I'm not sure either Rachel or I are ready to start cooking, really. I also hope Winamp has a better media library next time around (and I'll be plenty upset if they don't keep my ratings).
I have so much organizing to do... stuff to write... before I have kids and so on, you know?Labels: cars, computers, kids, obsession, photography, work |

| LePlan, part 2 |
It feels like it was forever ago, but at one point in my life, I was so strapped for cash that I had to make an elaborate plan to get out of the country.
No joke.
I had a hard time keeping all of the people involved in my head, and had to write it all down on a timetable in Excel. I called the file, 'leplan.xls.'
Fast forward a few years, and I'm in a much more comfortable place, and now have drawn this Georgia-time (i.e., casually-paced) plan:
- Re-wire the truck's entire electrical system with my awesome in-laws up in Prescott. Escape the heat, work online there, help them build their house, and get the truck to never-imagined levels of awesome.
- Look up a new house to live in that has a yard, laundry machine, a place to work on the fiberglass dash I need to put into Rachel's truck, isn' insanely expensive, and is close enough to Bookman's that Rachel can walk. The discount we get for not driving to work (either of us) is nice.
- Rent the place two weeks into August, and take those two weeks to move. Catalogue every last item. We'll be listing every item we own, and decide if we need it. If not, it's donated or sold. Keep the list for our house insurance, and update it as life goes on.
- Rachel takes her last class for her Bachelor's Degrees in Creative Writing and English Literature (fall semester). She drives her amazingly well-running truck.
- In January, I either get promoted to full-time at ITP, or keep working part time and begin finishing my teaching certificate. Either way, Rachel starts her graduate program classes in Library Science.
- After that, things get a bit fuzzy, but for now:
If we can afford it, sometime in Fall '08 or Spring '09, buy an RV, give the truck back to the in-laws for a while, tow the Bug and live on the road for about 3 months. Make a time-lapse video of the entire thing. Explore the entire United States, and decide on a place to settle down for the next few years. In all likelihood it will be in Arizona, but why not find out for sure? Living without regrets is a part of freedom.
- Reproduce on the road! Our kids will not know exactly where they were conceived, and I think that's vaguely awesome.
- Have kids. Name the girls Méria Jael and Artemis Ella; name the boys Aaron Isaac and Michael David.
- Buy a house.
- Live well.
Rachel and I also bought an awesome floor carpet today. We're moving out in a few months, and so Rachel will be taking stuff off of the walls and packing her books to ease the move. Still, for a few glorious weeks, we'll have the place basically 'right,' and that's awesome.Labels: ambition, college, gas, house, kids, money, Rachel, rant, RV, To-Do, work |

| Daily Show & God |
Apparently a news program posted that kids' "Top 10 Things About The World" has God-slash-Heaven as #10, behind "good food."
First, this is horrible journalism but what I liked was the Daily Show's take: this must be terribly troubling for God, but we don't have His take on it. If only He had a Top 10 things that He was worried about, things that He thought were important...

| Random Thought no. 14: Everyday life in a playground |
Should I ever decide to direct (or do sound FX for) a movie that involves children being slaughtered (I'm not planning on this, but you know, just in case) I think the best place to get the audio would be any playground in America. It's hard to tell whether those screams mean, "oh! What fun it is to play this game!" or, "MY SPLEEN HAS BEEN RUPTURED!! AAAAAAAAAAAEEEERRRGGHH!!!!!!!!!!!"
As an additional aside, Rachel wants to teach our (future) kids to say, "My spleen!" instead of "ow!" -- figures they'll get more attention that way.

| Random Thought no. 7: Electric Cars |
Electric cars are, in general, a good idea. They don't work so great, yet, but I dig the idea of running a car for a lot less money than I do now. One day we might not have to buy $65,000 worth of car to save $500 a year in gas...
But anyway. That's not really what I'm worried about, because the whole thing about cost will sort itself out eventually (I hope).
I'm worried about noise. One of the really unsettling things about seeing an electric car is when you turn it on - there's no noise. There is literally no discernible difference between when it's about to take off or it's just sitting there. This kinda freaks me out. Cars are dangerous enough when they make a ton of noise, but now we'll have stealthy 2-ton pedestrian flatteners on the loose. On the other hand, it really would be pretty ridiculous to have artificial sound-makers, wouldn't it?
So I don't know what to think about this. Flashing lights? No, that's for emergency vehicles. Sure, they have to happen for the environment's sake (and for costs' sake) but ... I remain freaked out.
PS - the new Fiona Apple and Sigur Ros albums are really good.

| Anecdote no. 3: Children Learning |
On a hot summer day, a working mother holds her small girl's hand in the park. She's distracted momentarily by a phone call, and the girl looks over to the very old man sitting on a bench with his dog.
The man and dog look very much alike - old and wrinkled, the skin droops on his face like cooled lava. His dog looks much the same.
On seeing the old man, the little girl's eyes grow wide and she wanders away from her distracted mother towards him.
"'Scuse me," she says. He lowers his eyes to meet her and smiles, in the way an old man's wane half-smile can be perfectly genuine.
"Hello." Her eyes grew even wider at the response. She is looking intently at the crevices in his face.
